What the foot knows: the sole as a sensory surface
The sole of the foot is a sensory organ. It carries one of the densest concentrations of touch receptors anywhere on the body, and whenever it touches the ground it reports — surface, texture, load, movement. That report is a working part of how you balance and how you walk. For most of a modern day, it is switched off inside a cushioned shoe.

The sensing surface
The plantar surface — the sole — carries a density of mechanoreceptors that rivals the fingertip. Different receptor types respond to different inputs: light touch and texture change, rapid vibration and pressure shift, sustained load. They feed continuously into the postural system, reporting what the ground is doing, where the load is distributed, whether the surface is shifting.
The densest concentrations sit at the heel and the ball of the foot — the surfaces that bear most load through a step. Kennedy and Inglis mapped this in a 2002 study in the Journal of Physiology, charting the nerve fibres across the sole. None of this reporting is conscious. The signals feed directly into gait, balance and posture, whether or not you are paying attention.
What a thick sole does
A cushioned sole is a filter. The pressure and texture signals the receptors would pick up from the ground are smoothed out before they arrive, so the foot works from less information. The small corrections that keep a stride stable depend on that information, which is why sole thickness is a balance question, not just a comfort question.
This is not an argument against all cushioning. For someone managing joint pain, or running long distances on hard roads, the trade-off can be worth making. It is an argument for knowing the trade-off exists: thicker soles mean less signal.
Sensitivity declines with age
Plantar sensitivity declines with age, and it declines without symptoms — there is no day when you notice it going. Research has linked reduced sensitivity in the soles to less stable gait and a higher rate of falls in older adults. It belongs in the same category as grip strength: a capability that fades over decades, with nothing to announce the loss.
It follows the same pattern as balance — worth training before it becomes a problem, and more responsive to practice than most people expect.
What practice does
Feet respond to use. In a 2019 trial in Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise, Ridge and colleagues found that eight weeks of walking in minimalist shoes strengthened the small muscles of the foot as effectively as a dedicated strengthening programme. That trial measured strength rather than sensation — the research on restoring sensitivity is younger — but the direction is consistent: a foot that is asked to sense and respond keeps its capacity to do so.
One practical rule: change footwear over weeks and months, not days. The same research group found, in a 2013 study, that runners who switched to minimalist shoes too quickly developed stress reactions in the foot bones.
The sauna is one of the few places modern life reliably takes the shoe off. Wooden boards underfoot, bare soles, a full session of ordinary sensation — barefoot time you already have, without adding anything to the day.
